BoingBoing linked to a previous story about Quorn being allergenic, which I've not heard claimed before. Supposedly about 5% of people have unpleasant reactions to it, which I find a bit hard to believe. I'm curious, though, so I shall make the most of my remaining days of paid account with a not particularly scientific poll:

I find Quorn makes me nauseous, but this is not because of any allergenic properties it may have.

It wasn't a serious problem, and merely down to the fact that my body doesn't get along with mushrooms and quorn is based around a mycoprotein which sets off a similar reaction.

If I have eaten quorn, it wasn't on purpose (and I definitely wouldn't buy something *because* it had quorn in). And it doesn't surprise me that some people may be allergic or intollerant to it - it is, after all, made of fungal proteins and some people are allergic to fungi.

No to stomach problems, but if I eat it more than a few times in a week, I get excema/hives, which is indicative of a mild allergy. I always put that down to the eggs (which produce a similar reaction) in it though, which lots of people are allergic to.

That was another reaction that was mentioned but I forgot to list it. I noted eggs and dairy on the poll because I have a hypothesis that some people are reacting to those, possibly unaware that they're present in Quorn.

Qorn intolerance

I have on three occasions eaten Quorn as the main ingredient in vegetarian meat substitutes, and suffered temporary adverse reactions. After 2 hours from eating Quorn, I begin to feel very unwell, and then nauseous, accompanied by violent shivering. Only after vomiting do I begin to recover. I now avoid Quorn.
