While Planet Debian is talking about money...

Julien Blache: "You’ll be pleased to learn that a release manager needs $6000 USD to cover for living expenses for a month."

Sounds high, right? But we're talking about contractors, not employees. Contractors have to cover certain expenses that are generally paid for by employers, such as (depending on jurisdiction):

  • Sales tax/VAT on receipts
  • Payroll tax
  • Health insurance
  • Unemployment insurance
  • Pension contributions
  • Vacation time

and in this case, their own equipment. (But they save on transport!)

Besides which, you have little idea how much Steve or Andi might need to pay in mortgage repayments or rent, or how many dependents they have. Nor should we pry into these personal circumstances.

It didn't sound high to me, but then I'm a contractor off and on.

I was once, and I got more than that on the basis of much less relevant experience. Though I did have to work in London.

First part, fine, but I don't understand the relevance of your last paragraph. We don't take into account people's mortgages or dependents when determining their salary; we expect them to take their expected income into account when they are deciding how much mortgage to take out or how many dependents to acquire. So why should this be different?

This isn't a salary. Two people in volunteer positions will be paid to work full time for a month, then continue as volunteers (actually one is giving up the position of RM after this release). There's no question of market rate because no-one else could come in and do those jobs without extensive training.

Jealousy

What I do not understand: it is everybodies free choice to volunteer for Debian. Why should your choice now depend on whether OTHER people are paid? Sounds like bitterness and hurt vanity to me.

Except that...

You're right, except that if you take off taxes, VAT, health insurance, unemployment insurance, pension contributions, etc., it's still far from the 'living expenses' it was supposed to be. It looks more like a 'standard' salary to me.

cost of an exmployee

In the states at least I've heard an employee's salary costs the company 30% more than what the employee receives. So $6000/mo. for a contractor is about a $4600/mo. salary. Then there's equipment cost like you mentioned.

Frankly, to be able to contract a full time person for a month for $6000 would be a joke for most professional IT contractors. Oracle DBA Consultants and IBM contractors easily make more than this in a week of contracting.

Everything is going to India because it is cheap labor, I can get work done there for 1/3 the price of here in the U.S. It is good, quality work as well !
