I was fairly productive despite needing to sleep a lot. I'm afraid I'm going to do this as a list because I don't feel like being verbose:

  • Sent out drafts of an advisory about the security flaw which I mentioned earlier in the year. I found several programs that are vulnerable to denial of service or code injection on Solaris, for similar reasons. I don't use Solaris but I passed this information on to Sun so they could investigate it (particularly in proprietary programs that I can't inspect), but they don't seem to be interested in doing so. I've now stopped waiting for them. Watch out for the advisory on 1st November if you run Solaris systems.
  • Reported a related bug in the Linux kernel that may result in user-land vulnerabilities on systems that use certain filesystems (particularly SMB/CIFS and NFS); I don't know when this is likely to be dealt with.
  • Made a new version of the Debconf5 DVDs, fixing some minor bugs and pointing to the new web site
  • Attended LinuxWorld Expo at Olympia on Wednesday, answering questions and raising money from shirts and DVDs on the Debian stand. I also sold a few of the Debconf5 DVDs to interested developers. Went to the pub with people from Lonix and Red Hat afterwards, but didn't stay that long as I was shattered. Got home about midnight.
  • Bought a colour printer for a fiver. It seems to work nicely with CUPS (now that I've worked out which extra package to install) but could do with a new colour cartridge. I now need to dispose of the Epson Stylus Colour 300 I was previously trying to use. Anyone interested, before I throw it away?
  • Organised books onto the bookcases into the front room, some of them swapping places with miscellaneous CDs and tapes which now go in the study.
  • Transferred my Amiga 1200 from its very ill-fitting low-profile PC desktop case into a less ill-fitting mini-tower case. Surprisingly it worked first time. Still need to fix the board in place properly, try upgrading the RAM, and get a working network card for it.
  • Updated sgt-puzzles to the latest upstream version and released a version incorporating some improvements in the Gtk user interface (online help, visible shortcuts and copying to clipboard rather than selection).
  • Sold our previous TV, which has been surplus to requirements since my parents gave us their old one (12 years old but still as good as new, AFAICS - I don't know why they replaced it).
  • Fixed the solder joint in my good earphones so the left channel works again. Don't know how long that'll last though.
