People are supposed to start arriving for the party in an hour or so (maybe more like two), and we are nowhere near ready for them.
This is partly due to the fact that we spent half of last night in the Accident & Emergency department of Addenbrooke's and didn't get to sleep until 7:40. Some silly goose (naming no names) broke a glass while washing it and cut her finger, which then started spurting blood. (Only a slight exaggeration.) The cut was deep enough that I reckoned (correctly) that it needed stitches, and besides which I wasn't confident of being able to stop the bleeding though we did slow it down quite a bit before leaving the house. She was fairly quickly attended to at A&E and was disinfected, drugged up, stitched, and wrapped. A little later she got a tetanus booster and was seent home with more free drugs for the next few days (antibiotics and painkillers). We tried to get a cab home, but it didn't show up, so we ended up getting a bus. (Being the largest employer in the city, Addenbrooke's is quite well served by buses, only not before 7 a.m.)
The one good thing about this is that we got a fantastically close look at a fox in daylight as we walked home along Walpole Road.
So, why am I sitting here writing instead of preparing? Um, I think my excuse is I'm still trying to wake up with the aid of some coffee.
